Besuch von GEG Vorlesungen am Geographischen Institut der Universität Basel
Im Rahmen vom Geographieunterricht haben verschiedene Klassen die Möglichkeit, Vorlesungen am Geographischen Institut der Universität Basel zu besuchen. Die Geographisch-Ethnologische Gesellschaft Basel (GEG) bietet jedes Wintersemester eine Ringvorlesung für ein interessiertes Publikum an. Dieses Mal lautete das geographische Oberthema «Grenzräume – Working at the Limit». Schülerinnen und Schüler zweier erster GM-Klassen konnten aus folgenden Angeboten jeweils einen Vortrag für sich auswählen, den sie besuchten und dann in Form eines vertiefenden Fach-Essays zusammenfassten:
- Donnerstag, 15. November 2018: Paul Castle: Arbeiten im Spannungsfeld «Entwicklung-Umwelt-Industrie»: Grenzräume bei der Syngenta Stiftung für nachhaltige Landwirtschaft
- Donnerstag, 13. Dezember 2018: Prof. Jakob Zinsstag: One Health - Ganzheitliche Gesundheitsvorsorge in den ärmsten Ländern der Erde
- Donnerstag, 21. Februar 2019: Prof. Reynald Delaloyle: Gebirgspermafrost im Wandel

Expert Lecture on Human Trafficking by Ima Matul

Ima Matul was invited by the geography department of the school to give a lecture on human trafficking. She is a “Survivor Coordinator for the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking” (CAST) in Los Angeles and also member of the U.S. Advisory Council on Human Trafficking. Ima, who was a victim of human trafficking herself, is very active in advocating for the rights of modern immigrant slave labourers and in campaigning for survivor-centred legislation on the issue of human trafficking in the United States. Several geography classes had the opportunity to receive first-hand information on the tragic and shocking reality of modern slavery, whose most vulnerable victims are children and young women. After the lecture, the students had the opportunity to discuss the issue with Ima Matul.
