Political education

Engaging with politics shows young people opportunities to take responsibility and shape their society as well as the state they live in. Political education is taught during a project week in the first year at the Gymnasium. It includes a visit to the Grand Council of Basel and debates with executive and council members. In addition, an external speaker will address the diverse global networks of Switzerland and discuss them with the classes. A written group assignment dedicated to a political topic provides the opportunity for additional immersion.

However, political education is not limited to this week. Sensible integration of the subject into history classes as well as economics and law classes will be continued during the four years of the Gymnasium. The following topics are likely: elections (canton and federal government), polls / votes (usually four voting dates per year) as well as other topical issues (Switzerland and EU, asylum policy, etc.). Political opinion-forming and debate is also promoted through events (for example, electoral podiums or participation in voting discussions of the "Young Council Basel").

Other opportunities to further our students' political education are offered by the EYP as well as the voluntary subject "Politics in practice".
