The IB Diploma Programme at GM

The IB Diploma Programme is a two-year programme. It consists of three core elements (theory of knowledge/ creativity, action, service/ extended essay) and six subjects  (first language / second language / humanities and social sciences / natural sciences / mathematics and information technology / art or another subject).

Theory of knowledge: An interdisciplinary course that guides the students towards an in-depth and critical analysis of the acquisition and application of knowledge.
Creativity, action, service: A total of 150 hours of artistic pursuits, sports and community service work is required. These activities may be linked to existing extracurricular activities, but must entail a new challenge.
Extended essay: In the second year of the Diploma Programme, students write a 4000-word research paper. The paper should be written in English. The extended essay is comparable to the Matura paper and generally counts for both requirements.


flexible subject groups at the GM – 6 Groups

Group 1: The student’s mother tongue or best language, from a total of 45 possible languages. In our programme, students can choose between German or English
Group 2: The second language, from a total of 45 possible languages. In our programme, students can choose between  English or German
Group 3: Humanities and social sciences, for example history, philosophy, geography.In our programme, students can choose between  Geography or History
Group 4: Natural sciences, can be chosen from subjects such as biology, chemistry,
or physics. In our programme: Biology
Group 5: Maths and computer science. In our programme: Mathematics standard level or higher level
Group 6: Art and music or an additional subject from group 2-5. In our programme: French
