EYP trip to Sweden January 2018

On Wednesday, the 24th of January four students from the classes 4a and 4b met with Ms. Spasojevic at the Basel Airport to embark on our 5 day trip to Sweden for the European Youth Parliament’s Swedish national session in Gothenburg. After a tiresome couple of hours on airplanes and a small sprint through the airport in Amsterdam we finally arrived in Gothenburg and made it to our cozy hostel.

After a sleepless night due to excitement we had the chance to visit the beautiful city that would be hosting us for the next several days. Together we visited the wonderful art museum, the Göteborgs Konstmuseum, and ate some typical Swedish food (meatballs with lingonberry jam) in the Saluhallen, Gothenburg’s version of our very own Markthalle. The rest of the day was spent wandering around the city seeing quaint neighborhoods and shops. We spent the in the kitchen of our hostel as we undertook the task of making Ukrainian Pierogi that we would present to the rest of the EYP delegates.

The following morning we set out in full formal clothing to finally make our way to the official venue of EYP Gothenburg 2018. The rest of the day we were occupied with teambuilding in our individual committees, getting to know the many people we would be working with over the next three days. This mostly involved playing funny games and repeating the names of our fellow delegates quietly in our heads over and over again. After a full day of socializing we spent the night in the hotel talking with our new friends, and a lot of coffee was consumed the next morning for our first day of committee work.

Each student attending was put into one of eight committees tasked with coming up with possible solutions to problems the EU is facing. One committee was handling the topic of the refugee crisis and another, transgender rights, for example. The next two days were mostly spent in a room with a handful of other delegates discussing and debating our given topic trying to agree on solutions that we would present during General Assembly on the last day. After many more cups of coffee and hours of debate, interrupted at night by fun activities like World Village where each delegation shared what food from their assigned country they had prepared, every committee had come up with a list of solutions. The last day everyone from the session made their way across the city of Gothenburg in their formal clothing to the venue where we would finally get the opportunity to show everyone what solutions we had come up with. General Assembly had come and with it, hours of attack speeches, open debate, voting, laughing and crying as every committee presented their resolutions to the assembly to try to have it passed. Unfortunately for us, we had a flight to catch, so our goodbyes were said during lunch that day as we left for the airport, meaning not all of us were able to participate as our committees’ resolutions were voted on.

Sad to leave Sweden, our new friends and our hard work behind, yet thrilled to have been able to participate in such an amazing event, we got on our flight back to Basel, once more through Amsterdam. We arrived back in Basel on Monday at 22:00 to missing suitcases, but nothing could bring us out of the euphoria brought upon us by the wonderful experience that was EYP Gothenburg 2018.

We would all like to thank Ms. Spasojevic for first of all accompanying us to Gothenburg and second of all for convincing us to join EYP and in doing so giving us the opportunity to participate in events like this. Thank you!
