Entry Requirements and Choice of the Main Elective Subject

Students can enter the Gymnasium am Münsterplatz without meeting any further requirements if they choose one of the following main elective subjects: Greek, Latin, Spanish, PPP (philosophy, psychology, pedagogy), or English (the latter has to be combined with IB). The condition is in each case that the general entry requirements are met.

For the main electives Latin and Greek, no previous knowledge is expected in the 1st year of Gymnasium (= 10th school year, not counting kindergarten).
Those choosing to combine the main elective subject Greek with the basic subject Latin can do English as an optional subject and/or participate in the International Baccalaureate’s Diploma Programme (IBDP) at the GM. It is also possible to combine the main elective subject Greek with the basic subject English, without doing Latin.

Those choosing Spanish or PPP as their main elective subject can study Latin in an optional course. This is highly recommended, because knowledge of Latin makes it much easier to later study Spanish or another modern language as a main subject at university. Moreover, the GM also allows the combination of the main electives Spanish and PPP with the International Baccalaureate’s Diploma Programme (IBDP).

Students opting for the main elective English have to do Italian for beginners or Latin (for beginners or advanced students) as a basic subject. Moreover, the main elective English has to be combined with IB because this means studying 5 more subjects in English, which significantly enhances students’ knowledge of English.
