Italian as third language combined with the main elective subject English and IB

Contact with the head of Italian department:

Mrs. Nadia Bloch

Italian as third language is a compulsory elective subject in combination with the main elective subject English and IB (International Baccalaureate).

As one of Switzerland’s four national languages, Italian is taught at Gymnasium am Münsterplatz. The classes emphasize the teaching of the language and communication, culture and history of Italian-speaking areas.

The Italian course lasts four years and it is completed with the Matura exam (B1). Starting from the first year, the development of all language skills (reading, listening, writing and speaking) is fostered.

Grammar and basic vocabulary, as well as easy readings and communication in everyday situations are paramount during the first two years. The students are able to express themselves in past, present and future tenses.

Building on these skills, the third and the fourth years of the Italian course enhance students’ linguistic skills. The students are able to comment on cultural topics and to read, understand and analyze literary texts.
