EYP National selection conference in Lausanne

"Shaping tomorrow with today's innovations" was the motto of the EYP National Selection Conference this year in Lausanne. On 8 September at 8:00 in the morning, three delegations from the Gymnasium am Münsterplatz participated in this event. 14 young, innovative minds set out to experience new sensations, to learn and to find inspiration for their creative potential waiting to be released. Upon arriving at the shores of Lac Léman, the magnitude of the challenge that stood before them started to become clear. We had just 5 days to tackle Europe’s most pressing problems, come up with viable solutions and then defend these.

The problems were and are very real, current and difficult to approach. They ranged from issues like the migrant crisis and EU-Turkey relations to future however no less terrifying ones such as automation and gene editing. We worked (mostly) tirelessly, spending countless hours digging for the roots of the problems, debating viable solutions, researching legal clauses included in Treaties signed over a decade ago and discovering, that communism may not be the best solution to our current economic predicaments. And after all the sleepless nights came the most difficult thing: Convincing everyone else that our resolution would be good for Europe.

Although the resolutions that pass the General Assembly don’t go on to solve the problems of Europe however much we would like them to, the whole thing wasn’t for naught. At the EYP, we learned to tap into our minds and come up with (mostly) new and exciting ideas. Innovative capacity is useless unless we learn how to wield it. EYP helps to give young people the confidence they need to do amazing things. And, who knows, maybe with the skills we gained at Lausanne we might be able to actually solve some of the problems in the future.
